In a period when many artistic investigations questioned the centrality of the traditional painting, Cacciola chose to interrogate painting from within, reducing the weight of representation and bringing forth the concrete materiality of the work. His research developed through a close engagement with industrial materials and the processes that define the surface.

Analytical Painting

Analytical Painting is not a rigidly uniform movement, but a collection of investigations that shared the desire to reflect on pictorial language without necessarily resorting to narrative images. For Cacciola, the painting becomes a field of verification: what matters is not to depict the world, but to understand how painting constitutes itself through a relationship between support, material, and space. The surface is not a transparent window; it is a physical presence that offers itself to the gaze and makes visible the process of its own creation.

Unconventional Materials

A central characteristic of his work is the use of materials such as cements, compounds, and substances of industrial origin, juxtaposed with or replacing traditional oil and acrylic paints. These materials introduce different weights, densities, opacities, and behaviours, transforming the canvas into a site of experimentation. This choice does not aim for a spectacular effect: it allows for questioning the conventions that identify painting with colour applied to a support. The material can cover, absorb, crack, or modify the perception of the surface.

Reduction and Presence

The reduction of figurative elements does not lead to a neutral image devoid of tension. On the contrary, when the composition focuses on a few relationships, every variation in thickness, consistency, and colour takes on a specific weight. The surface becomes a kind of sensitive field where the slightest change is perceptible. The work invites one to observe the painting as an object: not merely something to look at, but something that possesses a material dimension, a weight, and a concrete relationship with the surrounding space.

Method and Continuity

Throughout his career, Cacciola has maintained strong coherence in placing process at the centre of his work, while varying materials, formats, and solutions. The repetition of a method does not imply immobility: each work verifies a different possibility and makes the experimental nature of the practice perceptible. The painting is the result of a conscious choice of materials and procedures, but also the place where such decisions produce outcomes that are not entirely predictable. The artist’s control coexists with the physical response of the substances used.

Critical Placement

Cacciola contributed to a conception of painting in which content is inseparable from the way the work is made. His research shows that material is not a coating applied to an already conceived image, but an active component of meaning. The work is situated within the history of avant-gardes that questioned representation and, at the same time, maintains a direct relationship with the tradition of painting. Painting remains his field of investigation, but it is observed as a process, object, and system of relationships. For this reason, Cacciola’s works require a careful gaze at the surface and the time of viewing.

Main Solo Exhibitions

1971 – Galleria La Bertesca, Genoa

1971 – Galerie von Bartha, Basel

1972 – Galerie Kleber, Berlin

1973 – Galerie Holeczek, Freiburg

1974 – Superfici integrative – Pittura industriale, Galleria La Bertesca, Milan

1988 – Galleria Peira Arte Contemporanea, Bra

2006 – Fondazione Zappettini, Chiavari

2009 – La pittura tra concetto e materia, Artestudio, Milan

2010 – Continuità e interferenze, Progettoarte-Elm, Milan

2014 – Enzo Cacciola 1972-1977, Francesco Clivio Arte Moderna, Parma

2015 – Works 1975-2015, Luca Tommasi Arte Contemporanea, Milan

2015 – Cemento Amato, Galleria Santo Ficara, Florence

2016 – Concezioni, processi e contesti nella pittura (1973-2016), Progettoarte-Elm, Milan

2017 – Nanodur Chromatarm – Nuovi Cementi, Turin

2021 – Landscapes of Paint, Prisma Studio, Genoa

2022 – La leggerezza del cemento, Massimo Ligreggi, Catania

2024 – Il colore della terra, Progettoarte-Elm, Milan.

Main Group Exhibitions

1971 – Proposte 71, Galleria La Bertesca, Genoa

1972 – Prospettiva 5, Galleria Il Grifo, Rome

1974 – Grado Zero, Galleria La Bertesca, Genoa

1975 – Analytische Malerei, Düsseldorf

1977 – Documenta 6, Kassel

2007 – Analytical Painting.
