A poet, artist, essayist, and lecturer, for decades he traversed the boundaries between literature and visual arts, challenging the traditional separation between word and image. His research evolved during a period when mass culture, advertising, television, and journalistic communication were profoundly transforming the visual landscape and the way public opinion was formed. Pignotti interpreted this transformation not merely as a shift in taste, but as a cultural and political phenomenon that art could analyse from within.

The Birth of a Language

From the 1940s, Pignotti experimented with verbo-visual forms of writing, bringing poetic text closer to graphic composition and collage. In the early 1960s, he developed the concepts of “technological poetry” and “visual poetry”: forms of research in which the word is no longer just a vehicle of meaning, but also a plastic, typographic, and perceptual element. Text could be fragmented, enlarged, superimposed on photographs, or brought into collision with images taken from print media. The result was not an illustration of poetry, but rather a work constructed through the tension between different codes.

Gruppo 70 and Mass Media Culture

In 1963, Pignotti was among the founders of Gruppo 70, a collective experience that brought together poets, artists, musicians, and scholars interested in the relationships between art, technology, and contemporary communication. Shortly thereafter, he also participated in the formation of Gruppo 63, an important movement of the Italian literary neo-avant-garde. In this context, his activity took on both a creative and theoretical dimension: advertising, newspaper headlines, and media images were removed from their original function and reassembled to reveal the stereotypes, automatisms, and contradictions of public language.

Techniques, Themes, and Works

Collage is one of the most recognisable tools in his work. Clippings of photographs, words, slogans, and typographic fragments combine into synthetic structures, often ironic and disorienting. The power of the work arises from the distance between the original message and the new context: an advertising phrase can become ambiguous, an apparently innocuous image can reveal ideological content, a word can lose its transparency and become a visual sign. Pignotti also expanded poetry into happenings, performances, book-objects, cine-poems, and multi-sensory works, exploring sound, tactile, and behavioural dimensions.

Critical Activity and Teaching

Parallel to his artistic production, Pignotti maintained a constant activity as an essayist and militant critic, collaborating with newspapers, magazines, and cultural programmes. From 1971, he taught first in Florence and then at DAMS of the University of Bologna, helping to shape generations of students interested in avant-garde movements, mass media, and new languages. His writings address the relationship between poetry and communication, between artistic experimentation and technologies, arguing that art must confront the systems that organise collective perception.

Importance and Contemporary Relevance

Pignotti’s work retains particular relevance in the era of digital communication. His practice of appropriation, montage, and rewriting anticipates issues that are central today: the uncontrolled circulation of images, advertising persuasion, the manipulation of messages, and the difficulty of distinguishing between information and ideological construction. Visual poetry does not seek a peaceful synthesis between text and image; it prefers to maintain them in a conflictual dialogue, so that the audience is called upon to read actively. In this sense, Pignotti is not only a historical protagonist of the neo-avant-garde, but also a lucid observer of the mechanisms of contemporary visual culture.

["post-969","artisti","type-artisti","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry
["GET
